Here at AirMapp, we love barnfinds... so when we have the opportunity to save a classic Volkswagen abandonned for decades... we are in !
It's been a long time I hear my friend David talking about highroof split busses... and since a few months I could feel the envy of founding one growing more and more ! So when we found one abandonned in the south of France... he was like crazy !
We knew the owner was not in the VW scene but had the buss as an heritage... That seemed very interesting and we'll have to be quick so no one could have a deal before us ! Unfortunately David was VERY busy that week as he was opening his new bakery 3 days after ! So he didn't have a second to take care of this and was very worry to miss it.
It was quite a busy week for me as well, but I know how he should feel... so I rent a truck and left home at 3:30am to be in the south of France early in the morning and hopefully be back at work mid afternoon !
Arrived on site, here is what I found !
Flat tires, very damaged land with a 1 foot step to climb and almost no tools... I knew I wouldn't be back home as quickly as expected but hey, when you look how nice is the bus... it was worth it for sure ! =))
With the exception of the RHS dogleg and rocker, this ex-SwissPost bus is very straight and dry !
A few weeks ago yet, there was a shelter around the bus but it's been removed a little while before we rescued it... It probably helped keeping the bus in such a good condition !
Original gearbox and Engine are still there... all good ! Even a towbar as a bonus.
The Germans who used that bus in the 80's probably abandoned the bus in the area after a breakdown. There is some magazines inside, dated from 1988 !
Swiss Post VW bus = right hand drive.
Yes, you save quite some time if you are on the sidewalk side !
Taking photos is nice, but it's now time to load the VolksWagen.
Hard to steer the bus with those flat tires so we had to go in strength with ratchet straps.
Note the sliding door is very specific (shorter) to SwissPost busses as well. Very interesting.
This renting vehicle was not the best for such a high load, but that was all I can find so quickly... My way back will be much slower for sure !
Well, after a few hours drive and a lot of gas (!), I'm home !
Time to check the bus carrefully and see how nice it is.... Look how straight and dry is that side !
David came home yesterday to pick up his new bus and is very happy with it... We wish him a lot of fun !

Salut Raymond. Pour ta première question (prix) David te répondra s'il le souhaite, et pour la seconde par contre je ne penses pas m'avancer en te disant qu'il ne va pas être en vente de si tôt !! ;-)))
