This week was devoted to the front of the chassis... check the pictures !
So this week i began by rebuilding both original front wheel arches. Why install brand new (but crapy) sheet metal when you can restore original ? It took time but was worth it.
(Looks at the last pictures to see them finished !)
Then i worked on the front inner valence. As you may now if you are using reproduction panels, you can’t trust them. Thankfully I have a good amount of NOS parts for my samba, so i can compare the reproduction and the NOS one…
Here is the difference in the curve of the front inner valence :
If you install it as is, you might have some problem when fitting your A pillar and then your doors !!
So I managed to bent it to the correct shape.
Then I modified the wrong details. Those pressings shouldn’t be here on a barndoor. I removed them :
Here is the original hole cutted in the remains of the original valence from the bus. Maybe a specific detail for early barndoor ? So i rewelded that smaller hole on the reproduction panel !
I still have to make the holes for the bumper brackets rounded, but this will be sorted out quickly.
Here is again a comparaison between a NOS panel and the Klassic Fab reproduction. Looks at the difference of shape in the pressing for the shifer :
The reproduction looks very different…. No way I install this ! Plus, it is 5mm more on the front of the panel than the original one…. It may imply that once your shiter installed, it will have a wrong angle.
So I cutted the whole shape and reweld a new one… the result is much better and very identical to the original. Here is a picture once installed, with the cutted out area to compare :
I will not list all the modification done one the new panels, but they ALL need to receive modification to be period correct or to make them look better. For the moment there is not a single panel i’ve been able to install as is…. Not even the I beams on which the middle hole for shift rod where… not in the the middle ! But anyway.
I re-welded the front wheel wells and the tool box panel on the chassis.
So here is the tool box with the invisible repairs on top, bottom and sides panels :
And then I welded the inner valence and the whole front floor… So here are some pictures of the chassis as it is right now. Still a few finishings to do on this area but it is almost done :
Toujours aussi impressionnant quant à la qualité du travail effectué
je suis avec passion les différentes étapes....
Good job flo, tu nous en mets pleins les yeux...
Vive le NOS ...
Vraiment admiratif du travail déjà accompli, il y a encore quelques semaines le chassis était dans la glace ! Du très très beau boulot, hâte de voir la suite.
